Eye Tracking |
ASL or Applied Science Laboratories is a company dedicated to Eye Tracking for the research fields for Marketing, Sports, Academic, Medical, Military and Neuroscience. |
Eye Tracking is a method of tracking eye movement when looking at an image, and our behaviour can be analysed more deeply by tracking these movements and their fixation period. Eyes move constantly until a point is found where focus occurs. There are multiple types of eye movements, of which some are called saccades, fixations, and smooth pursuit. Fixations are the points at which the eye stops to focus, and can be from 100 to 600 mSecs, during which time the brain processes this information. A Saccade is the time taken for the eyes to move from one fixation point to the next, whose average time takes 20 to 40 mSecs, and during which the eyes don’t send information to the brain. Fixation is the point at which the eye stops to fix it’s attention. The eye is most receptive to signals at the very rear wall (Retina) of the eye and behind the lens, in an area called the Fovea, where there is the highest concentration of light sensitive cells. This is the very small area where we are able to observe sharp and colourful images, and covers only about 1 to 2 degrees of our vision. We are able to see a larger peripheral image but mostly unclear and mainly used for detecting movements and contrasting colours. Our brain can place it’s attention on areas around the focal point without moving the eyes, and is known as covert attention. The focused vision is normally a good measure of the attention given. For this reason, it makes sense that we can determine human behavioural patterns by following eye movement. The images below may clarify some of these points.
