Notes on Roughness Testers. Surface Roughness measurements are expressed in terms of Ra, Rz or Tp where the values include peak-to-valley profile measurements in combination with assessments of the frequency of peaks within the area under test. Ra is commonly defined as the arithmetic average roughness. A diamond stylus is moved across the sample and a piezoelectric pickup records all vertical movement. Peaks and valleys are recorded and converted into a known value of a given parameter. These instruments are portable, hand held surface roughness testers and are economical, digital & easy to use. These surface roughness testers are a given necessity for any shop floor that receives work with Ra requirements. These are commonly used in areas such as: · Mechanical manufacturing industry. Mostly used in the manufacture of metal. The primary function of roughness testers is testing the surface roughness of processed parts like the pot-ball roughness tester being perfect for testing hard surfaces such as in automobile parts manufacturing, mechanical parts manufacturing, The roughness tester is essential in every manufacturing industry engaged in quality of parts surface. · Manufacturing industry of of non-metal types. As the world develops in science and technology, more new materials are used in new manufacturing techniques, for example, pottery, plastic, polyethylene, etc. Nowadays some bearings are made in special pottery, and some pump valves are made in polyethylene. These materials are strong and some of them can be made into non metal parts. Their surface roughness also need testing in manufacture. · Manufacture of mechanical parts and gearing. Mechanical parts include bearing, fastening parts, pressing parts, bolts, gear and rack, cam, coupling, clutch, hydraulic units, reducers, micro-motors, timing motors, bearings, hydraulic units, sealing parts, gears in transmission and cranks need roughness testing. It is essential in the testing of inner and outer race of bearing, bearing ball, gear, crank which are all clearance-fit. Roughness testers are also used in some general parts, chain transmission setting, clinchers and connecting unit of transmission, such as washer, shaft, pin, key, expansion gear, buffer units, special spring etc. Roughness testing used in the electric motor is mainly for the testing of the surface of drivers, commutators etc,
